PURPOSE: To support the arts in the City of Milwaukee by: 1) direct financial support through a competitive grant process; 2) accepting, purchasing, commissioning, or providing partial funding for public art or art projects for the City's art collection with funds from the "Percent for Art" fund; 3) serving as an advocate for the arts singly, or in concert with other Milwaukee arts' organizations and offering advice and recommendations to the design of new and remodelled City facilities and other infrastructure.

COMPOSITION: Seventeen members, all appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Common Council. Members serve three-year terms. One member must be a member of the Cultural, Artistic and Musical Programming Advisory Council. At least one member must be a member of the Common Council. Two members must be appointed to represent the Milwaukee Board of School Directors. A majority of the members must be City residents.

A member who is not an elected official continues to serve after the completion of his or her term until reappointed or until a successor has been appointed.

Due to the nature of the business conducted by this body, members are required to file a Statement of Economic Interests with the Board of Ethics.

CREATING AUTHORITY: Section 320-12 of the Milwaukee Code of Ordinances.

SALARY: $20 per meeting for citizen members
